Artificial Intelligence has been a huge talking point for SEO since Chat-GPT came out last year. As SEO experts, we know just how important content is to your overall SEO strategy. It sure would be great if we could have a tool to cut the content creation time in half.

That’s why so many people were counting on Chat-GPT to help them with their content creation. But as time goes on, we have fully realized that using AI for content isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and can actually be harmful. 

Why is Chat-GPT Bad for SEO?

The first thing we need to ask is: What makes content good for SEO? Lucky for us, Google has already told us. They consider good content to meet the criteria of E-A-T: Expertise/Experience, Authority, and Timeliness. 

Unfortunately, Chat-GPT does not meet the criteria for any part of E-A-T. But why is that?

First, we need to get this out of the way. Chat-GPT is not technically AI. Artificial Intelligence means that a system needs to be able to think for itself and come up with its own ideas. Chat-GPT is an aggregate of general information all over the internet. 

Why is this important? It means that for Expertise and Experience, Chat-GPT is going to come up short because it does not actually have any experience to pull from or even makeup on the spot because it is not actually AI. 

Chat-GPT also cannot have any sense of authority because all the information they provide is general. How can you expect your content to have a sense of authority when the information provided is only the bare basics?

Timeliness will also not be on your side if you’re using Chat-GPT because all of the data available to the platform is several years old. In some industries, that might not be a huge deal. But in others, several years of missing data and information can make a world of difference. 

Why is E-A-T content so important? Because Google doesn’t index thousands of pages just to have duplicate content show up over and over again. They want a variety of unique answers and differing opinions on topics. If everyone is using Chat-GPT, nothing is unique and you’re at risk of Google not indexing your pages because it isn’t bringing anything new to the table.

How Can You Use Chat-GPT for SEO?

Just because you shouldn’t use Chat-GPT for writing your content, that doesn’t mean you can’t use the tool for SEO in general. AI is a great way to build document outlines and kickstart your content-writing process.

Say you’re working on building out a new content cluster for your website, and you have ten article ideas that support your selected keywords. Instead of asking ChatGPT for an article about each, ask it for a bullet point article outline. 

These outlines are great references to keep your article on-message. Having a clear outline also reduces the mental burden of writing. It’s many times easier to fill out an outline than it is to write a complete article free-form.

Sometimes, writers need a sounding board. Another brain to bounce their ideas off of. ChatGPT may be a mindless auto-complete robot, but in a pinch, it does the trick.

Trying to find the perfect headline for your latest article? Ask ChatGPT to generate ten exciting headlines for it. The output will probably be bland and general, but that’s not the point. Somewhere in that list of headlines, you’ll find a structure that jives with you, or a synonym that you couldn’t quite pin down.

Unfortunately, content writing is still incredibly important and still needs that human touch, So even though we shouldn’t be using Chat-GPT fo that, it doesn’t mean we can’t use it as another effective SEO tool.
