The Most Common Digital Marketing Questions from Our Clients in 2019

Over the last 350+ days, we’ve had hundreds of conversations with clients from businesses of all kinds – medical practices, law firms, universities, restaurants, whisky makers (obviously!) and associations to name a few. No matter the industry, their digital marketing questions remain the same. So, we figured we would just put them in a newsletter, along with the answers, and save us all a bit of time in 2020 ?! Joking aside, these are the questions we heard the most in 2019 and a few answers you may find helpful:

I need to do a website redesign. How much should I expect to pay?

If you are hiring an agency, which we highly recommend for optimal performance, a complete website redesign ranges from $12,000 to $20,000 depending on the extent of the project and should include everything without any hidden fees. These are a few elements we almost always recommend for every business:

  • A fresh photo and video shoot of your team, office, and clients. Our vetted SEOversite vendors offer this service and in most cases, fly to your location to make it happen.
  • Exceptional content that speaks to the concerns of your customers and describes the solutions you offer (your services), optimized for search engines across your entire website.
  • A killer design that makes for a seamless user-experience focused on timelessness over modernity. This keeps visitors on your website longer and increases the chances of those visitors converting into leads for your business, while allowing your site and investment to last longer.

How can I improve my rankings to get more website visitors and leads in a competitive market with a limited budget?

To answer this question, we take a look at your marketing strategy as a whole and find out where you fit on the marketing ladder. First and foremost, you must have a strong team ready to handle new leads before you invest in any marketing. Once that’s in place, we review your website. If your website visitors aren’t filling out your contact forms or calling your business, a website redesign or refresh may be in order to improve conversion percentage before you spend more money on SEO and web marketing. If your website isn’t attracting new visitors from Google, it’s time to invest in more organic SEO (search engine optimization). As we move up the ladder, we start looking at things like your ratings & reviews online and investing in PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns and paid social advertising.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all plan. The key is to know how, when, and where to reinvest your marketing dollars. We actually were fortunate to be on faculty at two meetings this year delivering messages on this exact topic of how, when, and how much to invest in what. At SEOversite, we work closely with our clients to understand their business and help them make the best marketing decisions, not just occasionally, but consistently, on a monthly basis. My website company seems shady… how do I know if they are legit?

You really don’t know until you dive into your Google Analytics and look at your website traffic (organic unique visitors are a great starting point), time spent on the site (minutes, not seconds is better), and how many of your web visitors are filling out a contact form or calling your office (if you have less than 3-4% you likely need to give us a call – it may not be a problem if you have heavy blog traffic, but it is worth looking at further). If it seems like your website isn’t performing well (leads are not trending up or volume is not sufficient for the spend), it’s time to take a closer look at what’s really happening within your analytics.

This is actually the entire reason we started SEOversite years ago. Most of our team members worked for companies just like yours and wasted money on website companies that essentially weren’t doing anything for their businesses. We saw the need for companies to have a resource they could trust when searching for a new website vendor. Through our 4-step vetting process, we now connect businesses with web teams that aren’t only trustworthy, but also help clients achieve amazing results. Did we mention this is a complimentary service?

My rankings have dropped, website traffic is down, and my web company says it’s because of a “Google Algorithm Update.” Should I be concerned?

Nope, this is normal. What you should be concerned about, however, is how your website company helps you recover after an update takes place.

The fact is that Google regularly updates its algorithms without warning, and it may impact your website’s SEO. Reacting quickly sounds great, but often the web marketing agency needs time to decipher what has occurred and the best approach to resolve it. That shouldn’t take years or even six months, but often does take days or weeks. Immediately after an algorithm update occurs, your web team should launch into trial and error mode to get your site performance back to where it was before, but taking a bit of time to research and be prudent. There is no question that after a couple of very positive years with limited major algorithmic shake-ups, the summer of 2018 through the end of 2019 saw a veritable plethora of major (think Earthquakes, not tremors) algorithmic changes that disproportionately, and often negatively, effect industry websites. So it’s been quite a year – check in with us to see how you are doing and if help is required. If you’re with a superb team, they should know how to handle the latest algorithm update within a few weeks and a rebound in visitors and leads should be following within a few weeks to 90 days.
